Tattoos and Piercings
Does the Bible say that it is a sin to get a tattoo
or have a body piercing?
This question causes some confusion because there was a time when God did absolutely forbid His people to make these types of changes to their bodies:
Do not cut your bodies for the dead, and do not mark your skin with tattoos. I am the Lord. Leviticus 19: 28
Because circumstances changed, later on in the Bible God revised these rules, stating this:
For these rules are only shadows of the reality yet to come. And Christ himself is that reality. Don’t let anyone condemn you by insisting on pious self-denial…These rules may seem wise because they require strong devotion, pious self denial, and severe bodily discipline. But they provide no help in conquering a person’s evil desires. Colossians 2:17–18a & 23
So getting a tattoo or piercing is not a sin in itself.
But (like many things) it can be a sin if you do it for the wrong reasons
For example, you should not get tattoos or piercings just to try and create an identity for yourself, define who you are or to make yourself better than others
Your identity must come from being a child of God and having a humble, Christ like character
And you should not get them just to “fit in” or to try and make yourself part of the accepted crowd
You must be confident in yourself as a Christian and not chase the approval of others
